The Oil Sands Discovery Centre in Fort McMurray is
in the heart of the world's biggest single oil deposit - the Athabasca Oil Sands. At the Centre you'll be
surrounded by BIG things - a dragline bucket, a 150 tonne heavy hauler with tires three metres high and
"Cyrus," an 850 tonne bucketwheel excavator. You'll really get the "big picture" when
you see our big screen movie "Quest for Energy." Discover us soon!
The Centre opened in 1985 as the Fort McMurray Oil Sands Interpretive Centre and changed its name to the Oil Sands Discovery Centre when it announced a major exhibit redevelopment project. The Centre is an educational facility committed to increasing public awareness, appreciation and knowledge about the oil sands industry. This is done by presenting and interpreting the history, technology and significance of the industry and its role in the development of Canada.
The Centre is a one of 18 provincial museums and historic sites, operated and maintained by the Alberta Government, Department of Tourism, Parks, Recreation and Culture.

May 15 through Labour day: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, open daily
For the remainder of the year: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, Closed on Mondays
2006 Admission Fees
- Adult (18 to 64) $6.00
- Senior (65 and over) $5.00
- Youth (7 to 17 years) $4.00
- Child (6 and under) Free
- Family $20.00 (Family admission includes two Adults and their children to age 17)
All admission fees include GST.
Members of outside Friends societies receive a 50% discount.
Experience the Energy Bus Tour - Adult - $4.50* Senior - $4.00*
Other Charter Bus Tours - 20% Discount for a group of 15 or more
ETE Tours are by agreement with Fort McMurray Tourism, reimbursable
year end. Other charter tours receive a 20% discount (Group is defined
as 15 or more). Bus drivers, tour leaders, interpreters, guides and
attendants accompanying handicapped persons are free. Organized schools/colleges/universities
- including teachers and bus drivers are all free. Promotional and
complimentary passes may be provided at discretion of the facility's
management.
* There are no Youth or Family rates for these ETE Tours. Youth will
pay adult rate. Adult members of a family will be charged the adult rate.
